Just break the rope!![]() When i was young, i used to hear stories of elephants attacks from my classmates who lived near the forest. They seemed interesting and at one time, i wished i lived near the forest. Elephants attacks, in reality, are never interesting. Once an elephant attacks you, be assured that you will live to tell, if ever you will ever live. In our area, elephants used to attack the villagers, in pursuit of food. They would break into granaries and consume all of the the harvest. A small farmer's crib is just but a snack for an adult elephant. I later came to learn that elephants have a very good memory. They are intelligent. They usually follow a path that was followed by their ancestors many years ago. I do not know if they pick scents like dogs or they are just intelligent like the scientists say, but that alone makes them extraordinary. If they happen to find a settlement along the path, they will flatten it and move on. Thy never go around their obstacles. I remember a story that i heard, a few years ago, about Jumbo. Jumbo was a circus elephant. Most of the villagers knew him. In the marketplace, during the festivals, jumbo will always be seen grazing at the stadium. One day, a villager who was passing by noticed that Jumbo was tied to a post with a thin rope. "Jumbo tied to a rope? And he can't break through? He wondered. This bothered him and he decided to ask the circus man. The man washing his clothes nearby. He moved towards him and asked: "Why is Jumbo not breaking through the rope?" The man replied. When the elephant was young, i tied the rope on its leg and it could not break it. The elephant grew knowing that it could not be able to break the rope. The villager shook his head and proceeded to the market. Sometimes we have conditioned ourselves to believe that we cannot make it. We cannot grow beyond our parents. We cannot travel beyond our countries. We cannot achieve beyond our imaginations. The good news is that we can. We can be what we ever dreamt to be and more. All we need is to break the rope. When i compare the elephants that used to terrorize us back in the village and Jumbo, i can see a very big difference. The former are wild and free while Jumbo was in captivity. Do you have some ropes you need to break? Don't wait just break them. And soar beyond the clouds. |
