The two friends![]() This is a story that reminds me of how much I should treasure my friends. Generally I take friendship seriously and I can tell you for sure that the few relationships that I have managed to maintain are mostly due to the strong friendship that binds them. On one sunny afternoon, two friends were walking on the beach. They were Mike and Maria. They had been friends for long and on Sunday afternoons, they usually used to spend their time on the beach as they watched the tide return. As they were walking, Maria picked a handful of sand and playfully threw it to Mike. Unfortunately, the sand got into his eyes. He knelt down and cried out in pain. With his finger, he wrote the following words on the sand; "Today, my best friend threw sand on my eyes!" They proceeded silent. Maria was remorseful. She did not mean to hurt him. Mike seemed very angry. As was the usual, they left the beach and followed the path into the magroove forest. In the middle of the forest, there was a huge rock. They climbed on the rock and settled on top. Mary was now uncomfortable. The afternoon had turned sorrowful. She pulled two apples from her backpack and offered him one. "I ain't getting forgiven?" She asked. Mike kept silent as he took the first bite on the apple. Then suddenly, Mary spotted something creeping toward Mike's back. It was a big scorpion. She jumped up and pushed Mike away. Mike rolled over. He sprung up furious. "That's enough! You are too much today" he shouted. Maria was shaking. She was staring at the rock. Mike followed her gaze and found it, a giant scorpion, with its sting raised high, just where he was seated. He looked at the creature and then looked at his friend. He knew that if the scorpion had stung him, he would be dead in a few minutes. "Thank you very much" he said He took a stick and struck the scorpion. He then picked a stone and on that rock, he engraved the following. "Today, my best friend Maria saved my life" As they walked back home, the silence was overwhelming. Maria was now calm but deep in thought. Mike was relaxed and humming. "Why did you engrave on the stone instead of writing on the sand as you did earlier" she asked. He kept silent and then replied "When friends wrong us, we record the wrongs where they can easily be blown away and forgotten. And when they do good things, we engrave them inside our hearts where they stay forever." "Hmmmm!" She looked at him and smilled. She reached for his hand and held it tightly. "Thank you for the lesson, and mostly for being my friend". She said. |
