The two foxes"Do you know the story of the two foxes? A heavy voice asked abruptly. I turned and seated right beside me, on the park bence, was a middle aged man. I was startled. Over the last few days, i had been going through so much stress. As i sat on the bench that afternoon, i hadn't noticed that time had passed. However, it did not matter, i was jobless and i had nothing to do that afternoon. I looked into this man and i could see his sharp eyes penetrating right into my mind. He scared me! "What about the two foxes?" I replied softly, trying to hide my fear. Jevanjee Gardens was a nice park to relax. Though crowded, the park had a very good atmosphere for relaxation. I knew that there were all sort of people on the park. And conmen were definitely there. He must be a conman looking for a way to take me in. I thought. "I will tell you!" He said. Once upon time, in the medieval age, there was a family that used to live in the forest. They were hunters and gatherers. One day as they were hunting, the old man and his son captured two foxes and locked them into a cage in their compound. They wanted to domesticate them. These foxes kept on fighting and the boy would keep on poking them with a stick to separate them. With time, he noticed that one fox would always start the fight. It was selfish and would not let the other eat its share. It wanted the whole meal on its own. Therefore he named them the Bad Fox and the Good Fox. One day as the man and his son sat outside their house, the two foxes started fighting again. The boy asked his father; "Father, which of these two foxes will win the fight, at the end?" What a strange question? He thought. He had never given a thought about the foxes. But after the son asked him the question, he realized how much the animals had bothered the boy. "My son, which one do you think will win?" He asked the son. "The Good fox father" He replied. "Why?" He curiosly asked. "Because you keep on telling me that the good always win over evil." He replied. The old man was amazed. His son is becoming a man. He was baffled by the words. How fast these children grow? Just the other day he saw him breathe his first breath. He thought. "But wait father! The Bad fox seem more aggressive. It might win!" He exclaimed sadly. The man sat upright and looked into his son's eyes. "Look here my son. The fox that will win is the strongest fox" He said. "But they both look strong" He replied to the father. "Yes they are. But overtime, one fox will become stronger than the other. It all depend on the fox that you will feed better" The old man replied. I sat on that bench as i listened to this story from the stranger. Time has passed and i could see that the park was almost empty. The man stood up, stretched his hand towards me and said; "I am leaving. Inside us, we all have the good fox and the bad fox. They keep fighting inside us. What determine our destiny depends on the fox that we choose to feed. Three years ago, i made a choice to fill my life with positivity and positive vibes, amidst all the troubles that i have gone through life. That is why i can afford to smile all the time." He firmly shook my hand and conntinued. "I am Dan. Nice to meet you!" He mentioned. I stayed quiet. I was still thinking about the whole story and the powerful message it delivered. " I am Amos. Thank you" I replied abit confused. "I need to rush home before it gets dark." He said. He slowly left. I stood transfigured as i watched him leave the park and vanish into the crowd that was rolling down the street. "What a strange man! What a strange story!" I thought. That same day, i made a decision that has directed me into who i am today. This story has been my guiding star. Everytime i am faced with a situation, i just ask myself this simple question; "Amos, which fox are you feeding? |
