My life as a Web Developer

1

I started developing websites way back in 2007, as a hobby. My interest in the internet started back in 2001. That is the time I opened my first email address. It was a yahoo email. It felt good to be above the rest. My college mates had no clue what and email address was. I had to take it upon myself to educate them and even assist them to open email accounts. This led me to start a yahoo group. Those were the days when an internet page would take a whole 5 minutes to open.

My first website design

In 2007, I was invited to Malaysia to pitch for a startup that we had established with my friend. As I was corresponding with the organizing organization, they needed more information about our project and I still remember the conversation with Anthony.

"Do you have a website that we could share with the potential investors? That will really help in preparing them for what to expect" he mentioned in the email message.

It took me two full days to develop one HTML page. I corresponded with a hosting company in Kenya and bought a domain and hosting. The website was up on the third day.

Those days, technology was not as advanced as it is today. Microsoft had a product they called PageMaker. That is what I used to make the website. It looked pretty decent then, but not as good as the websites today. This first website opened me into the world of web design. The website wowed everyone and instantly I realized that I was gifted on that side.

How I became a fulltime web developer

In 2008, I settled to do web design and development full time. I got a small office in Nairobi. That was the start of my career as a web developer.

I have seen the industry evolve from static non-responsive websites to dynamic, user-friendly and responsive web applications.

I have seen the coming of mobile technology, mobile app development and evolvement of JavaScript language.

I have experienced the rise of PHP, Javascript and MySQL and their power in web development.

I have developed websites for individuals, small, medium and large corporations, ranging from small one-page web pages to large information management systems and applications.
